On closer inspection, what seems to be a simple plant has eyes and lips and hosts a miniature community, where houses rest upon the leaves. Other plants appear to have sprouted arms and legs. While instantly attractive, the works in Pattie Lee Becker’s Botanicals series also embed stories in the details, transforming a collection of plants into a fantastical landscape on paper.
In drawing, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, and even a collection of dolls, Becker’s body of work is consistently inventive, and it has only expanded since the artist left the swirl of the New York art scene for Denver, Colorado. There, she has said, a freedom empowers her work, which frequently responds to personal stories, events, or emotion in kaleidoscopic color and shape.
Raised in the Midwest, Becker received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and her MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts; she has been awarded numerous residencies and fellowships.
