Irene Hardwicke Olivieri
Better is the Ready, 2010

Among the recurring themes in American artist Irene Hardwicke Olivieri’s enchanting, idiosyncratic, and curiously complex artworks, are self-portraits in which the artist is physically and emotionally exposed. She frequently incorporates art supplies—“symbols of hope, anticipation, and eagerness”—into her autobiographical paintings. When telling the story behind her larger-than-life work Better is the Ready, Olivieri relates how she thinks of the artist “like a soldier or scout, wearing badges of past experiences, triumphs, and challenges.” Neither humans nor animals are simple portraits under Olivieri’s brush; her works explore the wildness within and without.

Thoughtfully conceived and engagingly intricate, Pomegranate’s 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles combine superb color reproduction, stunning and unusual images, and sturdy construction to delight generations of novice and veteran puzzleworkers.
